Bee Housing

If you want to start playing with Bees, you will need some place to shelter them.
The Bee House, the Apiary and the Alveary are the three places that do just that.

Bee House

The Bee House is the “basic” tier of shelter for your bees. It has several limitations, including not accepting any frames and not being able to connect to any kind of pipes or similar. It is also impossible for bees to mutate to new species in it. It will however elongate the lifespan of your bees and increase their pollination speeds quite drastically.

Crafting

You will Require:

  • 5 x Wooden Planks (any)
  • 3 x Wooden Slabs (any)
  • 1 x Any Comb

Producing:

  • 1 x Bee House

GUI

The Bee House's GUI looks identical to the Alveary's GUI is similar to the Apiary's (it has no slots for frames)

  • I - Mating area and life bar. Queens and Princesses go on the top slot, Drones go on the Bottom slot.
  • II - Product slot. Bee products and offspring (when a Queen dies) ends up here.
The Bee House does NOT interact with pipes.
It also cannot be upgraded with frames.
Bees will not mutate in bee houses!

Apiary

The Apiary is the second tier of shelter for your bees.

Crafting

To craft an Apiary, you first need an Impregnated Casing, which is crafted like this in a Carpenter:

Requires:

  • 8x Wood (any)
  • 250 mB Seed Oil

Produces:

  • 1x Impregnated Casing

Then, the Apiary itself:

Requires:

Produces:

  • 1x Apiary

Hint: Someone may trade an Apiary for a bit of Wood.

GUI

The Apiary's GUI is divided into three main areas:

  • I - Mating area and life bar. Queens and Princesses go on the top slot, Drones go on the Bottom slot.
  • II - Product slot. Bee products and offspring (when a Queen dies) ends up here.
  • III - Upgrades slot. Frames go in here.

Frames

The Apiary is very slow (10% of the speed of the Alveary to produce bee products if you don't place any Frames in it. There are three types of frames, shown below:
Note: Each Frame increases output by 20%, regardless of type. The only difference between them is how long they last. With three Frames, the Apiary's speed increases to 70% of the Alveary's speed. (h/t Florastar)

Name Resources Recipe Notes
Untreated Frame 8x Stick
1x String
Doesn't last long, but it's cheap to make.
Impregnated Frame 8x Impregnated Stick
1x String
Lasts longer than the Untreated Frame.
Proven Frame None. You can only get them from Villager Trading. Lasts longer than the Impregnated Frame.

Alveary

The Alveary is an upgraded (and much more expensive) version of the Apiary.
Apart from being faster than an Apiary and requiring less maintenance, it is also capable of regulating the temperature using the Alveary Fan and the Alveary Heater blocks. See Temperature Control for more information.

Crafting

To make an Alveary, you need 27 Alveary Blocks, which are crafted like this:

Requires:

Produces:

  • 1x Alveary Block

Building

To build an Alveary, you need to build a 3x3x3 cube of Alveary Blocks, and then cover the top with Wooden Slabs.
Wait a few seconds for the Alveary to be created.

GUI

The Alveary's GUI is similar to the Apiary's, but it lacks the upgrade slot:

  • I - Mating area and life bar. Queens and Princesses go on the top slot, Drones go on the Bottom slot.
  • II - Product slot. Bee products and offspring (when a Queen dies) ends up here.

Temperature Control

Using the Alveary Fan and the Alveary Heater, you can control the temperature of the Alveary at the cost of BuildCraft power. This way, you don't need to have Apiaries on specific Biomes for specific bee species.

Alveary Heater

As the name implies, the Alveary Heater warms up the temperaure inside the Alveary.
To use it, replace one of the blocks of the Alveary (except the Slabs!) by the Alveary Heater Block, and use a powerful Buildcraft Engine to power it. The heater requires about 5 MJ/tick to continuously heat the alveary one step.
It is recommended to remove any Bees and items from the Alveary before doing this.

Crafting

Requires:

  • 1x Iron
  • 2x Golden Electron Tube
  • 1x Alveary Block
  • 3x Stone

Produces:

  • 1x Alveary Heater

Alveary Fan

The Alveary Fan does the exact opposite of the Alveary Heater: It cools down the temperature of the Alveary.
To use it, replace one of the blocks of the Alveary (except the Slabs!) by the Alveary Fan Block, and use a powerful Buildcraft Engine to power it. The fan requires about 5 MJ/tick keep the alveary continuously cooled 1 step.
It is recommended to remove any Bees and items from the Alveary before doing this.

Crafting

Requires:

  • 4x Iron
  • 1x Golden Electron Tube
  • 1x Alveary Block

Produces:

  • 1x Alveary Fan

Swarmer

The Swarmer is a special Alveary block, which has a 1% chance of spawning a Swarm Hive near the Apiary per Royal Jelly that's inside it. The bees found in those Swarms are the same as the one in the Alveary, but they have a chance of dying and not leaving any descendants (such bees are identified by a [-]).

Crafting

Requires:

  • 4x Diamantine Electron Tube
  • 2x Gold Ingot
  • 1x Alveary Block

Produces:

  • 1x Swarmer

GUI

The Swarmer is nothing more than an inventory. Place Royal Jelly in any of the four slots.

Usage

Similar to the Alveary Fan and Alveary Heater Blocks, the Swarmer replaces one of the blocks in the Apiary. Right-click it to access its inventory, and place Royal Jelly inside it for it to operate.

When a hive is ready to spawn, the swarmer's texture will change slightly, and a new hive (depicted above) will appear in the world somewhere nearby, within about 25 blocks of the alveary. It will contain only the new princess.

Pipes

Note: Tubes
RedPower 2 tubes behave differently than BuildCraft pipes! This is not a bug.

Both the Apiary and the Alveary use the same Pipe structure. A bee house will not connect with pipes.
Note: Pipes won't connect to the top of the Alveary,

Input

  • Any side: Bee Princesses/Drones/Queens. (I)

Powered Output

  • Sides only: Bee Products and offspring. (II)
1) 2.2.8.4 onwards, 0.5 before
2) Whether interaction with pipes, hoppers or similar is allowed.
3) Refilling frames cannot be automated.
4) ExtraBees adds a frame housing for alvearies.
